A developer named Tobi has ported a Minecraft clone to the Super Nintendo using only the console's stock hardware, no add-on chips required. The SNES runs the game without the Super FX chip that powered Star Fox and Doom's 3D geometry. The result is a playable SFC ROM with a functional starting world, block destruction, and construction.

The comparison is what makes this worth reading. Tobi previously built the same port for the Game Boy Color, and a brief clip in the video shows the Game Boy Advance version running with proper 3D rendering hardware. The gap between all three platforms is visible and instructive. The SNES version runs on sprites and hardware transformations alone, which sets a clear ceiling.

That ceiling is the real story here. The Super FX chip exists. SNES cartridge slot expansion is documented. The logical next question, one Tobi has not yet answered, is what this looks like with real polygon support added to the equation. The ROM is available on Tobi's Patreon now.
