Sheety, built by Roberto Alsina in Crystal, compiles spreadsheet definitions into self-contained executable binaries with zero runtime dependencies. The terminal UI includes mouse support, live formula editing, and round-trip import/export for both Excel files and human-readable YAML.

The core mechanic is worth understanding: formulas are baked into the binary at compile time. Edit a formula in the UI and Sheety recompiles a new binary on the fly to reflect the change. Excel format is supported, but not the full function library accumulated across 40-plus years of Excel development. Cell display width is not resizable.

Alsina admits no one actually needs this. That is precisely why it is worth reading in full: the architecture decisions behind compiling a live, editable data structure into a binary reveal how far Crystal's tooling can be pushed for unconventional use cases. The GitHub repository has source and setup instructions.
