A Motorola T900 two-way pager now runs as a Meshtastic mesh radio node. Builder zindustries87 gutted the obsolete hardware and fitted a Heltec V4 board carrying an ESP32-S3 inside the original case, giving the device a new communication layer that requires no smartphone and no cellular network.
Getting there required full reverse engineering of both the T900 keyboard and screen, neither of which has public documentation. zindustries87 had no guarantee either peripheral would respond to new hardware going in. That blind problem-solving, and the specific decisions made to squeeze the Heltec V4 into the existing enclosure, are the reason to read the original Reddit thread.
This is a confirmed prototype with basic functionality. The next phase targets additional features and a drop-in replacement PCB for the T900 form factor. Because the T900 had wide distribution, a generic PCB swap would put Meshtastic nodes into surplus hardware at scale, no custom enclosure required.
