A van builder called Whitburn Studio made RV countertops using printed Japanese cotton fabric as the structural fiber in a resin composite, producing a finished countertop that weighs 2.4 kg (5.2 lb) including the sink cutout.
The build uses a permanent internal buck: two layers of 3.6 mm plywood sandwiching XPS foam. The plywood carries the load, so only a single layer of decorative cotton plus one layer of fiberglass is needed on the surface. The fiberglass is not there for strength. It exists to protect the printed cotton pattern during sanding, which is where the entire project can fail. Sand through to the cotton and you restart from zero.
The process traces directly to Burt Rutan's moldless composite aircraft construction, adapted here for interior furniture. What makes the full video worth watching is the finishing sequence: multiple epoxy fill coats, progressive sanding, and final buffing are what produce the gloss surface. The weight number is the headline, but the failure modes and surface prep decisions are where the real technique lives.
