A cyclist called Attoparsec mounted a salvaged electric string trimmer to his bicycle helmet to prune overhanging branches on neglected North American bike paths. The trimmer is wired to a handlebar switch, activated on demand as branches approach, and the rider aims it by pointing their head.
The engineering is direct: a 3D-printed CAD-designed mount attaches the scavenged trimmer head cleanly to the helmet shell. Torque is low enough to produce no meaningful head movement. String length is calibrated to intercept branches before face contact. It is safe for other path users in a way that a front-mounted trimmer, his original concept, was not.
The full video is worth watching for the mechanical detail of the mount design and the live trimming footage on an actual bike path. The real question the piece raises is about infrastructure neglect severe enough that a rider engineered a wearable landscaping tool as the practical solution.
