Smashing Magazine's September 2026 wallpaper collection is live: free desktop wallpapers across more than 20 resolutions, from 320x480 to 2560x1440, with and without calendar overlays. Every piece was designed without editorial direction. Artists chose their own themes, built their own concepts, and submitted finished work. That constraint-free mandate is the actual story here, 15 years running.
The standout entry so far is 'Welcome Autumn' by Popart Studio, based in Serbia. The illustration uses a woodland canopy as a natural arch, rendered in amber, rust, and deep burgundy, drawn from the streets of Novi Sad. The design brief was entirely self-generated. No client, no stakeholder, just a seasonal observation turned into a finished asset.
The full post contains the complete resolution list for each piece and artist notes explaining the reasoning behind each concept. Those notes are worth reading. They document how working designers think when nobody is asking them for anything specific, which is a different kind of information than a portfolio or a brief provides. Submissions for future months are open now.
