A hacker called Holofermes has patched the Godox C100, a cheap toy camera built around a dashcam sensor, to function as a USB webcam with a Raspberry Pi Zero dock. The full patch set is published on GitHub.
The C100 runs FreeRTOS on an ARM architecture with 16MB of RAM and a native 1920x1080 sensor, not the upscaled VGA common in cameras at this price point. The patches layer on top of stock firmware, but the tradeoff is total: while modded, the device operates only as a USB drive or webcam. Restoring camera function requires reflashing the original firmware.
What makes this worth reading is the methodology. Holofermes documents the hardware internals in enough detail to serve as a starting point for anyone targeting similar dashcam-in-a-case hardware. The question the piece leaves open is how many other novelty cameras share this architecture and are equally exploitable.
