A hacker named Melan reverse-engineered an Intellian i4 marine satellite dish for land-based use. The first obstacle: the dish expects to be on a boat. Melan solved this by feeding it spoofed NMEA sentences from an RP2040 microcontroller paired with an RS-422 module, convincing the antenna it had a vessel heading.

Getting the official Intellian software running required only an email to the company. But Melan went further: sniffing the serial traffic between that software and the Antenna Control Unit, then decompiling the code to extract the full control protocol. The result is direct azimuth and elevation commands, no proprietary software required.

The full writeup at melanpan.nl details every step of the protocol reconstruction, which is where the real value is. If you work with surplus satellite hardware or want a repeatable method for stripping vendor lock-out of dish controllers, read the original before skimming the summary.
