Google is open-sourcing its entire 3D emoji set, releasing raw .OBJ files to the public on World Emoji Day.
The design process required solving problems that never exist in 2D work. A smiley face is not automatically a sphere. It can be a mask, a disc, or a full volumetric object, and that choice has downstream consequences for lighting, shadow, and use inside VR environments. The Verge piece walks through how Google's team made those calls, which is the part worth reading slowly.
The .OBJ format means these assets drop directly into standard 3D pipelines. Game engines, VR worlds, and production tools can ingest them without conversion. Google built something, decided to give it away, and explained its thinking. The methodology section alone justifies the click.
