Anthropic has extended Claude Fable 5 access on all paid plans through July 19, the second such extension, driven by compute constraints and uncertainty around demand. Users get up to half their weekly usage limit on Fable 5 before falling back to usage credits or another model. Claude Code weekly rate limits stay 50% higher through the same date.
OpenAI is moving in the opposite direction. Thibault Sottiaux announced this morning that the 5-hour usage cap is temporarily removed for Plus, Business, and Pro plans, GPT-5.6 Sol is getting efficiency improvements that will reduce usage consumption, and the platform just hit 6 million active users. No rationing, no expiry dates.
The competitive read here is simple: Anthropic's rolling extensions are costing them users. Every time Fable's availability date shifts, OpenAI benefits from the contrast.
