Artemis II just set the farthest human spaceflight record in history: 252,756 miles (406,771 km) from Earth, surpassing the mark held since Apollo 13 in 1970.
Five Apollo veterans are still alive, all in their 90s. Of the 24 humans who flew to the Moon between 1968 and 1972, only 12 walked the surface. The Artemis II crew, all in their 40s and 50s, flew more than 4,000 miles beyond Apollo lunar mission altitudes without landing, adding four names to the short list of humans who have traveled to the Moon.
The full piece is worth reading for Fred Haise's direct response to losing his record, and for what the generational handoff between Apollo survivors and the Artemis crew actually looks like up close.
