Survival LLM is an offline AI chatbot trained specifically for post-infrastructure scenarios. It runs locally on your machine, pulling answers from medical references, survival manuals, FEMA and CDC documents, and nearly one million Wikipedia articles. You need internet access to install it, so the time to set it up is now.

The model you get depends on your hardware. Under 32 GB of RAM loads IBM Granite 4.2 8B, which answered 14 of 22 benchmark test questions correctly. NVIDIA Nemotron 3.5 Super scored 21 out of 22 but requires a minimum of 128 GB of RAM. The installer handles the assessment and model selection automatically.

The full write-up is worth reading for the benchmark breakdown across multiple models and the sourcing details behind the training set. The obvious gap, powering the hardware when the grid is down, is left as an exercise for the reader. The project page is at brangus.io/survival-llm.
