MIT CSAIL has built ShiftLens, a system for 3D printing mechanically actuated lenticular objects that change visible color or pattern based on physical movement of their outer lens layer.

The construction is three components: a transparent lens layer with linear lenticules, a patterned color layer beneath it, and an actuation mechanism, which can be a knob, switch, or roller, that shifts the two layers relative to each other. The most concrete application shown is a bottle indicator that visually confirms when a cap is properly closed. No public design tool exists yet. The team built one internally for Rhino and has not released it.

The reason to read the full piece and watch the embedded video is not the novelty of lenticular optics but the specifics of how the print geometry is structured to make the effect work at the layer level.
